Japan Spouse Visa Processing Time: How Long Does Immigration Take?

Japan Immigration Law Insights | October 2026

How Long Does a Japanese Spouse Visa Application Take?

Processing times for Japanese spouse visa applications (Spouse or Child of Japanese National) vary depending on the application type and individual circumstances.

Based on the April–September 2026 figures referenced in this article, the approximate average processing times are:

Application Type Average Processing Time
Certificate of Eligibility (COE) Approximately 80 days
Change of Residence Status Approximately 43 days

These figures are averages, not guaranteed processing periods.

Actual examination times may differ significantly depending on the couple’s marital history, financial circumstances, previous immigration records, and the immigration office handling the application.

Applications involving incomplete documentation or circumstances requiring additional verification may take considerably longer.

1. How Can You Avoid Delays in Spouse Visa Processing?

Although applicants cannot directly control immigration processing times, careful preparation may help prevent unnecessary delays.

Based on our experience at Continental Immigration, applications processed relatively quickly often share three characteristics:

1. Clear Legal and Factual Explanations

The application clearly demonstrates that the couple meets the relevant immigration requirements. The relationship history and other material circumstances are explained consistently in the questionnaire and supporting statements.

2. Complete Required Documentation

All mandatory documents are properly prepared and submitted without omissions or inconsistencies.

3. Sufficient Supporting Evidence

Additional evidence is provided where necessary to establish the authenticity of the marriage and address potential concerns before immigration authorities request further documentation.

The objective is to present an application that can be assessed without unnecessary clarification.

2. Which Applications May Require Additional Examination?

Certain circumstances may lead to closer scrutiny and longer processing periods, including:

  • A substantial age difference between spouses
  • Multiple previous marriages or divorces
  • A relatively short relationship history
  • Limited household income or financial uncertainty
  • Retirement and reliance on pension income
  • Both spouses currently residing outside Japan
  • Previous immigration compliance issues

These circumstances do not automatically result in refusal. However, they may require more extensive documentation.

Japanese immigration examination procedures distinguish between applications considered suitable for approval, those requiring careful examination, those considered unsuitable for approval, and those requiring additional evidence.

A well-prepared application can help immigration officers assess the relevant facts efficiently.

3. Can You Check Your Spouse Visa Application Status?

Japan’s Immigration Services Agency generally does not disclose detailed examination progress or provide a reliable estimate of when an individual application will be completed.

Applicants are typically informed only that their application remains under examination.

Frequent telephone inquiries or complaints do not accelerate the examination process.

If additional information is required, immigration authorities may issue a formal request for supporting documents.

Such requests can arise at any stage of the examination.

Applicants should respond promptly and accurately, ensuring that the submitted documents address the specific questions raised by the immigration officer.

4. Planning Your Relocation to Japan

Processing time is particularly important for international couples coordinating overseas assignments, employment arrangements, family relocation, or travel schedules.

Because approval dates cannot be guaranteed, couples should allow sufficient time for document preparation and immigration examination.

Depending on individual circumstances, the application route or anticipated relocation schedule may need to be reconsidered.
