Japan Spouse Visa for Retirees and Senior Couples: Financial Requirements and Eligibility

Can Retired or Elderly Couples Obtain a Japanese Spouse Visa?

We frequently receive inquiries from couples who married later in life or have lived overseas for many years and now wish to spend their retirement in Japan.

A common question is whether a foreign spouse can obtain a Japanese spouse visa (Spouse or Child of Japanese National) when both spouses are elderly, retired, or no longer employed.

The answer is yes. Retirement or advanced age does not, by itself, prevent a foreign national from obtaining a Japanese spouse visa.

As with other spouse visa applications, Japanese immigration authorities primarily examine whether the marriage is genuine and whether the couple has sufficient financial resources to maintain a stable life in Japan.

1. Financial Requirements for Retired Spouse Visa Applicants

For working-age couples, financial stability can often be demonstrated through employment contracts and regular salary income.

Retired couples, however, may have little or no employment income. In such cases, immigration authorities will examine the household’s overall financial circumstances and ability to support itself in Japan.

Relevant financial resources may include:

  • Japanese pensions: National Pension and Employees’ Pension Insurance benefits
  • Foreign pensions: U.S. Social Security benefits and other overseas retirement pensions
  • Financial assets: Bank deposits, savings, securities, and investments
  • Property income: Rental income and other income generated from assets
  • Family support: Financial assistance from relatives or other qualifying supporters in Japan

For example, a retired couple receiving U.S. Social Security benefits may be able to demonstrate financial stability through pension statements, bank records, and other supporting documentation.

Where pension income is limited, immigration authorities may examine available savings, assets, and the financial circumstances of family members providing support.

There is no universally fixed minimum income threshold for Japanese spouse visa applicants. Financial sufficiency is assessed according to each household’s individual circumstances.

Consequently, retired applicants should provide a clear and credible explanation of how they intend to finance their life in Japan.

2. Proving a Genuine Marriage After Retirement

Financial stability is not the only consideration.

Japanese immigration authorities must also confirm that the marital relationship is genuine and continues to exist.

Even couples who have been married for several decades may be required to submit evidence demonstrating their ongoing marital relationship.

Relevant documentation may include marriage certificates, records of shared residence, family photographs, and other evidence of their life together.

Although such requirements may seem unnecessary to couples with a long-established marriage, documentary evidence remains an important part of the Japanese spouse visa examination process.
