Marriage Between Japanese and Canadian Citizens: Registration and Spouse Visa Procedures
International Marriage & Japan Immigration Law | Updated October 2026
How Can a Japanese Citizen Marry a Canadian National?
A marriage between a Japanese citizen and a Canadian national may be legally registered in either Japan or Canada.
For the Canadian spouse to obtain the Japanese residence status known as Spouse or Child of Japanese National, the marriage must be legally valid and properly documented.
In Canada, marriage procedures are regulated primarily at the provincial and territorial levels. Consequently, the requirements in Ontario may differ from those in British Columbia, including marriage age, parental consent, and administrative procedures.
Couples should therefore consider their current residence, required documentation, processing times, and future plans before deciding where to marry.
1. Getting Married in Japan First
Where the couple chooses to marry in Japan, the procedure generally involves two steps.
Step 1: Obtain a Marriage Affidavit From the Canadian Embassy
Canadian nationals intending to marry in Japan must generally obtain a Marriage Affidavit confirming that they are legally free to marry.
The affidavit is sworn in person before an authorized official at the Canadian Embassy or Consulate in Japan. Applicants should not sign the document before the appointment.
Typical requirements include:
- Valid Canadian passport
- Completed Marriage Affidavit form
- Information concerning marital status and the intended spouse
- Additional documents requested by the diplomatic mission
The Canadian government does not issue a conventional Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage for this purpose. Instead, Japanese municipalities accept the Marriage Affidavit as supporting evidence.
Step 2: Register the Marriage at a Japanese Municipal Office
After obtaining the affidavit, the couple submits a marriage notification (Kon-in Todoke) to the appropriate municipal office in Japan.
Typical documents include:
Canadian spouse:
- Marriage Affidavit and Japanese translation
- Birth certificate and Japanese translation, where required
- Passport
- Residence card, if applicable
Japanese spouse:
- Identification documents
- Family register (Koseki Tohon), where required
- Marriage notification signed by two adult witnesses
Documentary requirements may vary by municipality.
Once the marriage is legally registered in Japan, it is generally recognized in Canada without a separate Canadian registration procedure.
The Canadian Embassy does not issue a Canadian marriage certificate for a marriage performed in Japan. The couple may instead obtain a Japanese marriage registration certificate or an updated family register.
2. Getting Married in Canada First
Where the couple chooses to marry in Canada, the marriage must comply with the requirements of the province or territory where the ceremony takes place.
For example, Ontario generally permits marriage from age 18, while applicants aged 16 or 17 require the applicable parental or legal authorization. British Columbia has different rules concerning individuals under 19.
The principal procedure generally involves three steps.
Step 1: Prepare the Required Marriage Documents
The Japanese spouse may need to provide proof of identity, marital status, or legal capacity to marry.
Depending on the province, supporting documents may include a Japanese family register, passport, or a certificate issued by Japanese authorities.
Applicants should confirm whether translations, authentication, or additional declarations are required.
Step 2: Obtain a Marriage Licence and Complete the Ceremony
In many Canadian provinces, couples obtain a Marriage Licence before the wedding.
The licence’s validity depends on local law. For example, an Ontario marriage licence is valid for three months.
The marriage ceremony must be conducted by a legally authorized officiant in accordance with provincial requirements.
Following registration, the relevant provincial authority issues an official Marriage Certificate.
Step 3: Report the Marriage to Japanese Authorities
A marriage legally concluded in Canada must be reported to Japanese authorities to update the Japanese spouse’s family register.
The notification should generally be submitted within three months of the marriage.
It may be filed through a Japanese embassy or consulate in Canada or the appropriate municipal office in Japan.
Typical documents include:
- Japanese marriage notification
- Canadian Marriage Certificate
- Japanese translation of the marriage certificate
- Passport or nationality documentation
- Additional documents requested by the relevant authority
Where the couple intends to apply promptly for a Japanese spouse visa, the time required for the marriage to appear in the Japanese family register should be considered.
3. Applying for a Japanese Spouse Visa After Marriage
After completing the marriage registration procedures, the Canadian spouse may apply for Spouse or Child of Japanese National status.
Japanese immigration authorities examine the authenticity of the marriage, the couple’s intended residence in Japan, and their financial circumstances.
Where the Canadian spouse currently resides overseas, the standard procedure generally involves obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) before applying for a Japanese visa.
Where the Canadian spouse already holds an eligible residence status in Japan, an application for a Change of Status of Residence may be appropriate.
Financial Evidence for Couples Relocating From Canada
Couples returning to Japan after living in Canada may not have recent Japanese income or tax certificates.
In such cases, Canadian financial documentation may help establish the household’s ability to support itself in Japan.
Relevant evidence may include:
- Canadian income tax returns and Notices of Assessment
- T4 Statements of Remuneration Paid
- Employment and salary certificates
- Bank statements and other financial records
- Employment transfer letters confirming a position in Japan
The appropriate evidence depends on the couple’s individual circumstances.
