Marriage Between Japanese and Indian Citizens: Registration and Spouse Visa Procedures
International Marriage & Japan Immigration Law | Updated October 2026
How Can a Japanese Citizen Marry an Indian National?
A Japanese citizen and an Indian national may legally marry in either Japan or India.
For the Indian spouse to obtain Japan’s residence status Spouse or Child of Japanese National, the marriage must be legally valid and appropriately documented under the applicable laws.
Under India’s Special Marriage Act, the general minimum marriage age is 21 for men and 18 for women. Other requirements include the absence of an existing spouse and legal capacity to consent to marriage.
India has multiple marriage laws, including the Special Marriage Act and laws governing marriages under particular religious traditions. The appropriate procedure depends on the couple’s circumstances.
Couples should consider their current residence, religious and legal requirements, processing times, and plans for living in Japan before deciding where to marry.
1. Getting Married in Japan First
When a Japanese citizen and an Indian national choose to marry in Japan, the procedure generally involves registering the marriage at a Japanese municipal office and confirming the necessary Indian documentation.
Step 1: Obtain a Single-Status Certificate or Marriage Eligibility Document
The Indian spouse may be required to provide evidence that they are legally eligible to marry.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs provides guidance on obtaining a Bachelorhood or Single-Status Certificate through a competent court or Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).
Depending on the issuing authority, the document may require authentication or an apostille.
Applicants should confirm with the Japanese municipal office whether a single-status certificate, affidavit, or other supporting document will be accepted.
Step 2: Register the Marriage at a Japanese Municipal Office
The couple submits a marriage notification (Kon-in Todoke) to the appropriate municipal office in Japan.
Typical documents include:
Indian spouse:
- Single-Status Certificate or other accepted marriage eligibility document, with Japanese translation
- Birth certificate and Japanese translation, where required
- Passport
- Residence card, if applicable
Japanese spouse:
- Identification documents
- Family register (Koseki Tohon), where required
- Marriage notification signed by two adult witnesses
Additional documents or authentication may be requested depending on the municipality.
Once the marriage notification is accepted, the marriage becomes legally effective in Japan.

Step 3: Confirm Marriage Registration Procedures With the Indian Embassy
The Embassy of India in Tokyo provides marriage registration services for eligible couples.
Depending on the applicable procedure, supporting documents may include:
- Japanese Certificate of Acceptance of Marriage Notification
- Japanese family register reflecting the marriage
- Passports of both spouses
- Marriage registration forms
- Translations and authenticated documents, where required
Certain procedures may involve a public notice period and the attendance of witnesses.
Whether additional registration with Indian authorities is necessary should be confirmed for the particular marriage.
For Japanese spouse visa applications, where an official Indian marriage certificate cannot be obtained, Japanese immigration authorities permit applicants to explain why the document is unavailable. Whether additional evidence is sufficient is assessed individually.
2. Getting Married in India First
Couples marrying in India must follow the applicable Indian marriage law.
For Japanese–Indian couples choosing a civil marriage, the Special Marriage Act, 1954 is an important option.
The procedure generally involves preparing documents, submitting a notice of intended marriage, completing the marriage formalities, and reporting the marriage to Japan.
Step 1: Prepare the Required Marriage Documents
The Japanese spouse may need to obtain a Certificate of Legal Capacity to Contract Marriage from a Japanese embassy or consulate or an appropriate authority in Japan.
Depending on local requirements, additional documents may include:
- Passports and identification documents
- Birth certificates or other proof of age
- Proof of residence in India
- Japanese Certificate of Legal Capacity to Marry, where required
- Documents concerning previous marriages
- Translations or authenticated documents
Requirements should be confirmed with the responsible Marriage Officer before filing.
Step 2: Complete the Marriage Under Indian Law
Under the Special Marriage Act, the couple submits a Notice of Intended Marriage to the Marriage Officer of the relevant district.
At least one party must generally have resided in that district for 30 days immediately before submitting the notice.
A further 30-day notice period ordinarily applies before the marriage may be solemnized.
The marriage is completed before the Marriage Officer in the presence of three witnesses, and an official Marriage Certificate is issued.
Couples who marry under applicable religious marriage laws should ensure that they obtain the official registration documentation needed for subsequent Japanese procedures.
Step 3: Report the Marriage to Japanese Authorities
After a marriage is legally concluded in India, the Japanese spouse must report it to Japanese authorities.
The notification must generally be submitted within three months of the marriage.
It may be filed through a Japanese embassy or consulate in India or the appropriate municipal office in Japan.
Typical documents include:
- Japanese marriage notification
- Official Indian Marriage Certificate
- Japanese translation of the marriage certificate
- Passport or other nationality documentation
- Additional documents requested by the relevant authority
Japanese diplomatic missions generally require an official marriage certificate issued by a competent Indian authority. A certificate issued solely by a religious institution may not be accepted for Japanese family registration purposes.
Couples intending to apply for a Japanese spouse visa should consider the time required for the marriage to be reflected in the Japanese family register.
3. How to Obtain a Japanese Spouse Visa After Marriage
Marriage registration alone does not grant the Indian spouse permission to reside in Japan.
After the marriage is legally established and appropriately documented, the Indian spouse may apply for Spouse or Child of Japanese National status.
Japanese immigration authorities examine:
- Whether the marriage is legally valid and genuine
- The couple’s relationship history and supporting evidence
- Household income, savings, and financial stability
- The couple’s intended residence and living arrangements in Japan
Applying From India: Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
If the Indian spouse currently resides in India, the standard procedure generally involves applying for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) through Japan’s Immigration Services Agency.
Once the COE is issued, the Indian spouse applies for the appropriate visa through the Japanese diplomatic mission or designated visa application channel in India.
Applying From Japan: Change of Status of Residence
If the Indian spouse already resides in Japan under a qualifying residence status, such as a work or student status, an Application for Change of Status of Residence may be available.
The appropriate procedure depends on the applicant’s current immigration status and individual circumstances.
