Japan Spouse Visa for Couples Who Marry Quickly: Immigration Scrutiny and Evidence
Japan Immigration Law Insights | October 2026
Can a Quick Marriage Affect a Japanese Spouse Visa Application?
Some couples decide to marry shortly after meeting. Such marriages, often called speed marriages or whirlwind marriages, are not unusual, and the length of a relationship does not necessarily determine whether a marriage is genuine.
However, a Japanese spouse visa application involving a short courtship or limited in-person contact may require more detailed evidence of the relationship.
Foreign nationals wishing to live in Japan with their Japanese spouse generally need the residence status Spouse or Child of Japanese National, unless they already qualify for another appropriate residence status.
1. Why Are Some Spouse Visa Applications Examined More Carefully?
Japan’s Immigration Services Agency examines whether a marriage is genuine rather than entered into solely to obtain residence status.
Certain circumstances may raise additional questions, including:
- A relatively short relationship before marriage
- Very few in-person meetings before the wedding
- No wedding ceremony or family introductions
- A substantial age difference between spouses
- Meeting through an international matchmaking service or marriage agency
- Inconsistencies in the couple’s explanations of their relationship
These circumstances do not automatically indicate a fraudulent marriage. They may, however, make it necessary to provide further explanations and supporting evidence.
The applicant’s nationality, educational background, or country of origin is not, by itself, proof that a marriage is not genuine.
2. What If the Couple Married Within Three or Six Months?
Couples sometimes marry within three or six months of first meeting.
Although a short courtship may lead immigration authorities to examine the relationship more closely, Japanese immigration law does not establish a fixed minimum dating period for spouse visa approval.
Instead, the couple should clearly explain:
- How and when they first met
- How their relationship developed
- How frequently they communicated or met in person
- Why they decided to marry within a short period
- Whether their families are aware of and support the marriage
For example, a couple who knew each other for several years before formally beginning their relationship may have a reasonable explanation for marrying shortly afterward.
Similarly, where a marriage follows a previous divorce, the chronology of the relationship should be accurately explained.
3. How Can Couples Demonstrate a Genuine Marriage?
The official spouse visa questionnaire requires information about the couple’s relationship history and circumstances leading to marriage.
Supporting evidence may include:
- Photographs of the couple together
- Travel and meeting records
- Messaging and telephone communication histories
- Evidence of family introductions
- Wedding records, where available
- Written explanations of unusual circumstances
Couples who have met only a few times or have not held a wedding ceremony should provide a clear account of their relationship, supported by available evidence.
A wedding ceremony is not a legal prerequisite for obtaining spouse residence status.
4. Considering Alternative Residence Statuses
Where an immediate spouse visa application presents evidentiary difficulties, the couple may consider whether the foreign spouse independently qualifies for another residence status.
Depending on their qualifications and activities, possible alternatives include:
- Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services
- Highly Skilled Professional
- Business Manager
Each status has its own eligibility requirements.
A short courtship alone is not a reason to postpone marriage or assume that a spouse visa will be refused. The appropriate application strategy depends on the couple’s actual circumstances and the available evidence.
