Japan Spouse Visa: Proof of Foreign Income
Foreign Income as Proof of Financial Support for a Japan Spouse Visa
Can Overseas Income Be Used for a Japanese Spouse Visa?
When applying for a Japanese spouse visa (Spouse or Child of Japanese National), some couples rely primarily on income earned overseas by the foreign spouse.
In such cases, Japan’s Immigration Services Agency may accept foreign income documentation as evidence of financial stability.
Examples of supporting documents include:
- United States: Federal income tax returns and Form W-2
- Canada: T4 slips and income tax returns
- Other countries: Official tax returns and equivalent income certificates
These documents may help establish the applicant household’s financial circumstances, even where the principal source of income is outside Japan.

Tax Reporting After Moving to Japan
After relocating to Japan, foreign nationals must comply with applicable Japanese tax laws and relevant international tax treaties.
Depending on their tax residency and individual circumstances, they may be required to report foreign income in Japan.
Japanese tax authorities may subsequently issue official income or taxation certificates. Foreign-currency income is generally converted into Japanese yen for the relevant assessment.
Why Financial Stability Matters
Household income and financial stability are important considerations in Japanese spouse visa applications.
Immigration authorities assess whether the couple has sufficient financial resources to maintain a stable life in Japan.
Where income documentation is insufficient or the household’s financial circumstances are unclear, the application may be subject to additional scrutiny or refusal.
Applicants relying on overseas income should therefore prepare accurate and credible financial evidence before submitting their spouse visa applications.
