Earning HSP Points for Research Publications in Japan

Earning HSP Points for Research Publications in Japan

Are you a researcher with multiple academic publications? Under Japan’s Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) Points System, you can earn up to 20 additional points for research publications, making you eligible for permanent residency in Japan sooner. Here’s a breakdown of the criteria for earning these points. You may apply for permanent residence application with HSP points right now.

Requirements for HSP Points through Academic Publications

The Immigration Office of Japan recognizes up to 20 points for academic publications if the following conditions are met:

  • Published in an approved academic database (e.g., SciVerse Scopus by Elsevier)
  • You are the first author (primary author) of the publications
  • With 3 or more qualifying papers, you may earn 20 points (HSP Category I) or 15 points (HSP Category II)

Important Notes

Master’s theses or doctoral dissertations that aren’t registered in Scopus or another recognized database are not eligible. Professors from Japan’s former Imperial Universities (such as the University of Tokyo or Kyoto University) seeking more details can contact Continental Immigration for personalized support.
