What IT qualifications can be counted towards HSP points in an permanent residence application?

IT qualification holders recognised by Japan (IT KOKUJI) may be granted PR after only 1 year’s stay in Japan.

 IT certifications for Permanent Residence 

When applying for permanent residence(PR) using Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) points, it is possible to obtain a PR permit with stay in Japan of one year.

Specifically, if you have more than 70 or 80 HSP points, the requirement for the period of stay in Japan is relaxed: if you have more than 70 points, you can stay in Japan for 3 years; if you have more than 80 points, you can stay in Japan for one year.

Up to 10 points (5 for one, 10 for several) can be added to your HSP points if you have an IT qualification recognised by the law called the ‘IT KOKUJI(IT告示)’.

Your IT qualifications gives you an advantage when applying for permanent residence. This is because the Japanese Government gives preferential treatment to highly qualified IT professionals.

If your HSP points are not enough to meet the 70-80 points in terms of annual income, years in the job, Japanese language skills, etc., you may be able to meet the criteria if you hold an IT qualification.

IT qualifications are specifically defined. Private qualifications such as Microsoft, CISCO or AWS are not covered.

Japan (IPA) has signed a commitment for mutual recognition of IT qualifications with IT examinations bodies in 12 Asian countries (India, Singapore, South Korea, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Taiwan, Mongolia and Bangladesh).
