Japan Spouse Visa Screening: What Immigration Checks
What Japanese Immigration Authorities Examine in Spouse Visa Applications
Japan, like many other OECD countries, has historically faced challenges involving marriages of convenience entered into for immigration purposes.
Consequently, applicants for a Japanese spouse visa (Spouse or Child of Japanese National) are required to provide detailed information demonstrating that their marriage is genuine.
Although Japanese immigration law does not discriminate on the basis of nationality, applicants from countries historically associated with higher incidences of fraudulent marriages may, in practice, face closer scrutiny.
What Information Is Required?
Japanese immigration authorities generally examine the following aspects of the marital relationship:
- When and how the couple first met
- How their romantic relationship began
- Significant events during their relationship
- The language used for communication between the spouses
- Whether a wedding ceremony was held
- Divorce history
- Which family members are aware of the marriage
- Household income and financial arrangements
- The couple’s intended marital residence
Applicants must substantiate these matters through the questionnaire(質問書) and supporting evidence. Supporting evidence may include photographs, communication records from messaging applications or social media, and relevant official documents.
Document-Based Examination
Japanese spouse visa applications are generally examined on the basis of written documentation rather than personal interviews.
Applicants should therefore ensure that their relationship history and marital circumstances are clearly and consistently explained in the submitted documents.
Insufficient explanations or inadequate supporting evidence may result in the application being denied.
Circumstances Requiring Particular Attention
Certain circumstances may lead immigration authorities to examine an application more carefully, including:
- Nationality associated with historical patterns of marriage fraud
- A substantial age difference between spouses, particularly 10–15 years or more
- A relatively short period of dating or courtship
- Multiple previous divorces
- Uncertainty regarding household income or financial stability
- Retirees | Elder people
- Receiving Income from Overseas
None of these circumstances automatically establishes that a marriage is fraudulent. Nevertheless, they may increase the importance of providing credible explanations and supporting documentation.
For many applicants, the Japanese spouse visa process is their first experience with this level of immigration scrutiny.
Spouse visas are generally issued for periods of one, three, or five years. Obtaining a five-year visa is relatively difficult. Most applicants initially receive a one-year period of stay, and it often takes several years to progress to a three-year and eventually a five-year period.
Note: On the other hand, since a five-year period of stay is required for permanent residency applications, there may be circumstances in which changing to a spouse visa is not advisable.

Persons Eligible for the “Spouse or Child of Japanese National” Status of Residence
The status of residence “Spouse or Child of Japanese National” (commonly referred to as a spouse visa, marriage visa, or partner visa) applies to foreign nationals who are a spouse of a Japanese national, a person born as the child of a Japanese national, or a special adopted child.
A “spouse” means a person who is legally married under applicable law and whose marital relationship is recognized as genuine and substantive. Therefore, common-law or de facto relationships and same-sex marriages that are not recognized as marriages under Japanese law are not included. Likewise, a former spouse who has divorced a Japanese spouse or whose Japanese spouse has died is not included.
