PR status to live with your parents
I am a permanent resident. I want to live with my parents from my home country to take care of my child. Can I switch to a Highly Skilled Professional visa and bring my parents?
If you switch from RP rattus to a Highly Skilled Professional visa and meet the conditions, you can live in Japan with your parents from your home country while your child is under 7 years old.
Switching from PR Status to a Highly Skilled Professional Visa
Highly Skilled Professional visa holders have the privilege of living with their foreign parents while their child is under 7 years old. However, permanent residents do not have this right. Current permanent residents can switch to a Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) visa. Researchers and scholars qualify for HSP 1- i, while company employees qualify for HSP 1-ro. If you score 70 points or more on the HSP points calculation, you will generally be granted the switch. However, you will lose your permanent residency status but can regain it later.
Conditions for Bringing Parents to Japan on an HSP Visa
To bring your parents from your home country on an HSP visa, the following conditions must be met:
Criteria
- You need to take care of a child under 7 years old.
- Your household income must be 8 million yen or more.
- The foreign HSP visa holder and their parents must live together.
- Only one parent (father, mother, or both) of the couple is eligible; you cannot bring both sets of parents.
If these conditions are met, your parents can live in Japan with a specific activity residence status and stay until your child turns 7, with renewals every six months or one year.
Conditions for HSP Visa Holders to Bring Parents
- The need to take care of a child under 7 years old for more than three months.
- A household income of 8 million yen or more.
- Living together with the foreign HSP visa holder.
- Only one parent from either side of the family.
Details of Each Condition
- Child Care for More Than Three Months: Children under 7 include the biological or adopted children of the foreign HSP visa holder and their spouse. This also applies if the foreign HSP visa holder or their spouse is pregnant and needs assistance. If the child is no longer under 7, the renewal will not be granted. This also applies to subsequent children until they turn 7.
- Household Income of 8 Million Yen or More: At the time of application, the household income must be 8 million yen or more. This includes the combined annual income of the foreign HSP visa holder and their spouse, but not any other family members.
- Living Together: The parent must live with the foreign HSP visa holder; living separately and commuting to care for grandchildren is not allowed. The foreign HSP visa holder must be the child or child’s spouse of the invited parent.
- Only One Parent Eligible: Only one parent from either the foreign HSP visa holder or their spouse can be invited. You cannot invite both sets of parents.
