Employees on secondment from outside Japan
A Transferee visa is obtained when foreign employees working for an overseas parent company or subsidiary company are transferred or seconded to the Japanese entity.
Employees are granted Transferee visas, while directors and senior management are granted Business Manager visas.
Requirements for Transferee VISA
(1) Worked in a foreign group company for at least one year in a white-collar position
(2) Limited period of planned activity in Japan
(3) Must be in a white-collar position in Japan (same as 技術・人文知識・国際業務 visa)
(4) Salary equal to or higher than that of a Japanese national
(5) Employer’s (Japan) business volume and financial situation
Eligible foreign group companies mean companies that are consolidated under Japanese consolidated accounting standards. Salaries may be paid entirely from overseas or Japan, or may be split 50-50 between the sender and the recipient of the secondment, for example.
The examination period is generally 1-3 months, but can vary depending on the immigration office applying, the employer and the applicant’s circumstances.
If the seconded employee has a master’s degree or higher, an estimated annual income of at least 10 million JPY, or holds JLPT N1, he/she may be eligible for Highly Skilled Professional visa (HSP).
HSP holders are entitled to preferential treatment, including the granting of a 5-year visa, the ability to bring in a parent to look after a child, and permanent residency for a minimum of one year.
They may be an attractive Benefit for employees. HR managers in companies should feel free to contact us for further information.
