Highly Skilled Professionals in Japan

Eligibility for Parental Support

Q: I am in Japan on a Highly Skilled Professional visa and would like to bring my parent(s) from my home country to help care for my child. What are the requirements?

A: To invite a parent from your home country under a Highly Skilled Professional visa, you must have a child under seven years of age and an annual household income of at least 8 million yen.

FYI: Medical Stay VISA

Sponsoring Parental Visits with Special Criteria In Japan, there’s no specific stay visa for the parents of foreign nationals with work visas due to the government’s reluctance to increase the elderly population. However, for foreigners holding a Highly Skilled Professional visa, it’s permitted to summon parents and/or both parents from their home country for childcare purposes.

The conditions for bringing a parent to Japan under a Highly Skilled Professional visa are specific: 1) There must be a child under the age of seven requiring care, 2) the household must have an annual income of over 8 million yen, 3) the visa holder and parent(s) must live together, and 4) only one set of parents (father, mother, or both) per couple is allowed. These conditions met, the parent(s) can come to Japan on a Designated Activities visa and have the option to renew their visa every year or six months until the child reaches the age of seven.

Additionally, those holding a Highly Skilled Professional visa are also allowed to bring a housekeeper from their home country or employ one in Japan, which could be another viable option for childcare.

Criteria for a Highly Skilled Professional to Bring Parents

  • The care for a child under seven is needed for more than three months.
  • The household income exceeds 8 million yen annually.
  • The Highly Skilled Professional and the parent(s) will cohabit.
  • Only the parent(s) from one side of the couple is applicable; you cannot invite parents from both partners simultaneously.
